Indian Meal Moth

Indian meal moths are pantry pests that infest stored grains and food products. They are commonly found in kitchens and pantries.

Quick Identification Guide: Moths in the Home

1. Identify the Type of Moth

  • Pantry Moths (Indian Meal Moths): These moths are attracted to dry food products. They are usually small, with a wingspan of about 1/2 inch, and have a distinctive two-toned appearance—dark brown at the wing tips and light gray at the base.
  • Clothes Moths (Common and Case-Bearing Clothes Moths): These moths are often found near clothing and textiles. They are small, about 1/4 inch long, and have golden or buff-colored wings. They avoid light and are usually found in dark, undisturbed areas.

2. Check for Physical Evidence

  • Pantry Moths:
    • Larvae and Webbing: Look for small, worm-like larvae and silk webbing in food packages. Common infestations occur in grains, cereals, nuts, and pet food.
    • Eggs: Tiny white eggs may be present on the surfaces of food items or containers.
  • Clothes Moths:
    • Damage to Fabrics: Look for irregular holes in clothing, blankets, or upholstery. Wool, silk, and fur are particularly vulnerable.
    • Cocoons and Larvae: Small cocoons and larvae may be found in closets, drawers, or storage areas. Larvae are creamy-white and about 1/2 inch long.

3. Inspect Common Infestation Areas

  • Kitchen and Pantry: Check all dry food storage areas, including unopened packages, for signs of pantry moths. Don't forget to inspect pet food storage areas as well.
  • Closets and Storage Areas: Examine closets, drawers, and storage boxes for signs of clothes moths. Pay special attention to items made of natural fibers.
